Aylward, Ed.M., Chair of the 2016 WNY Advising Conference Senior Academic Advisor/Prehealth, University at Buffalo To join, update your information, or be removed from this distribution list, please visit: http://wnyadvising.weebly.com/email-list As someone who works in higher education, I am following these hashtags associated with the national conversation about the University of Missouri, Yale, Ithaca College, and many other institutions across the country I recommend that you check them out (especially on twitter). There are a great many positive and negative comments. They show real concerns, pain, and experiences of black college students across the US. It is important to listen, to these stories, no matter how hard they may be to to hear or how virulent the responses are.
We are at a time when what individuals, institutions, and the country do about these concerns will have significance to how the world develops. I can only hope that it brings some positive change before my daughter and son graduate from high school and are looking for the next step in their education / career. It is important for everyone to explore their own racial identity and strive for multicultural competence (awareness, knowledge, & skills). It is equally important for everyone to enter into dialog and take action to address these issues, rather than place the burden on others to do so. by John P. Sauter Jr., Ph.D. @JohnPSauter I want to let WNY Advising professionals know of an upcoming free NACADA webinar on Tuesday. I am working with the NACADA Executive Office to moderate the #NACADAReads & #Acadv twitter chat discussion for the event, which is a good opportunity to see how twitter can be used for professional development. Please feel free to share it if you know of anyone else who might be interested.

UB Women in STEM is sponsoring a brown bag, noon time lecture series that explores gender differences in STEM careers. Our featured speakers will share their insights and challenge your assumptions. Bring your lunch and a friend! Introduction: Karen King, PhD, Program Manager, Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Partnership, University at Buffalo Presenter: Lora Park, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology, University at Buffalo Abstract: Women are underrepresented in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Dr. Lora Park will discuss social psychological research on the effects of romantic goal pursuit in shaping women's interest in these traditionally male-dominated fields, and discuss implications for women's motivation and performance in STEM. This brown bag lunch lecture is hosted at UB’s Honors College, located in 108 Capen Hall, inside the Silverman Library. Admission is free and open to the public. Space is limited so advanced registration is requested. Future dates to be announced. WE ALL MADE IT! Registration is over, grades are in, and retention analysis can begin! I’M SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU! You, my student and academic advising friends, Rock! I’m sure that not one thing was overlooked on anyone’s plate and your social media accounts are truly up-to-date right? …RIGHT??? Okay ya’ll, I hear ya. The first thing to get thrown to the back of my mind is keeping up with my social media accounts when there are students to see and emails to answer. But without constant engagement, you begin to lose student’s interest. This is the age of instant gratification and live newsfeeds, without having new content (especially on twitter!) your students begin to lose interest and stop following you. So with a small staff and an endless amount of students, how does one manage their social media? Having a social media content calendar can be a godsend for all student affairs professionals. By creating a calendar and marking important dates for your institution such as drop/add, resignation, orientations, study workshops, etc. , you begin to build a set guide for what type of posts you want to create and designate when you will be posting them. Here is an example of a social media calendar I created for the School of Management for April of 2013: As you can see, I literally laid out for each week what I would be posting and when. I did this for the entire year, and made changes or updated as needed. By using a content calendar, I could then take advantage of programs such as Hootsuite or other social media dashboards and create posts ahead of time and designate the day in which I wanted it to post. This was a huge time (and sanity!) saver during our peak registration time and I couldn’t dedicate the time needed.
Another Pro Tip: This could also be something that an intern or student worker could have a hand in creating! Happy Posting! by John Sauter Niagara University Want a little student affairs humor to enjoy this weekend? Be sure to check out #FailedNASPAsessionProposals.
