As someone who works in higher education, I am following these hashtags associated with the national conversation about the University of Missouri, Yale, Ithaca College, and many other institutions across the country I recommend that you check them out (especially on twitter). There are a great many positive and negative comments. They show real concerns, pain, and experiences of black college students across the US. It is important to listen, to these stories, no matter how hard they may be to to hear or how virulent the responses are.
We are at a time when what individuals, institutions, and the country do about these concerns will have significance to how the world develops. I can only hope that it brings some positive change before my daughter and son graduate from high school and are looking for the next step in their education / career. It is important for everyone to explore their own racial identity and strive for multicultural competence (awareness, knowledge, & skills). It is equally important for everyone to enter into dialog and take action to address these issues, rather than place the burden on others to do so. by John P. Sauter Jr., Ph.D. @JohnPSauter
