Basics of Twitter
Twitter Basics
- @Username - Use it to connect to a specific person, account, or organization.
- #Hashtag - Use it to connect with a specific idea, group, or event.
- Twitter shortens website links automatically, but you can still use other sites for even shorter links.
- Pictures posted in twitter will show up under your profile, some apps (Hootsuite, etc...), may appear as links without a preview.
- Example: Join us in collecting #AcAdv and #SAPro resources at @WNYAdvising.
- @WNYAdvising Thanks for the resources
- This is not as visible in your feed, but allows for conversations and will show up if someone clicks on the original tweet..
- Starting a tweet off with a @... shows it to that person rather than the world, so avoid using that to start a general tweet or message that you want to get out there. Some will start a tweet with a period ".@wnyadvising" to avoid this.
- RT @WNYAdvising Be sure to Join #acadv chat on Tuesdays at 1pm.
- This is seen by the most people and is the best way to share info or ideas
- You have the option to quote the tweet to add your own commentary to it.
- Twitter may cut off long RT automatically, but some apps like Tweetdeck require you to do it manually.
- @WNYAdvising Thanks for the resources

Conference BackChannels
Conference back-channels are a great way to learn & connect with colleagues at specific conferences. Most are a combination of the conference initials and the date. Even better, you don't even have to be at the conference to benefit from them. Click here for more information.
