I’m sure all of my loyal blogging fans (for the two posts I’ve made so far..) have been truly worried about my long absence and where I have been…Have no fear! WE ALL MADE IT! Registration is over, grades are in, and retention analysis can begin! I’M SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU! You, my student and academic advising friends, Rock! I’m sure that not one thing was overlooked on anyone’s plate and your social media accounts are truly up-to-date right? …RIGHT??? Okay ya’ll, I hear ya. The first thing to get thrown to the back of my mind is keeping up with my social media accounts when there are students to see and emails to answer. But without constant engagement, you begin to lose student’s interest. This is the age of instant gratification and live newsfeeds, without having new content (especially on twitter!) your students begin to lose interest and stop following you. So with a small staff and an endless amount of students, how does one manage their social media? Having a social media content calendar can be a godsend for all student affairs professionals. By creating a calendar and marking important dates for your institution such as drop/add, resignation, orientations, study workshops, etc. , you begin to build a set guide for what type of posts you want to create and designate when you will be posting them. Here is an example of a social media calendar I created for the School of Management for April of 2013: As you can see, I literally laid out for each week what I would be posting and when. I did this for the entire year, and made changes or updated as needed. By using a content calendar, I could then take advantage of programs such as Hootsuite or other social media dashboards and create posts ahead of time and designate the day in which I wanted it to post. This was a huge time (and sanity!) saver during our peak registration time and I couldn’t dedicate the time needed.
Another Pro Tip: This could also be something that an intern or student worker could have a hand in creating! Happy Posting!
