Session 3 - 1:20 - 2:20 P.M.
3A - How to Write a Conference Proposal
Abstract
Have you ever attended a conference and thought, “I think I could present on ___ topic!” Maybe you have been deterred by the idea of actually writing a session proposal, or feel like you don’t have enough “experience” to contribute to the conversation happening during conferences. This session is designed to help you start brainstorming possible topics and collaborations with others, while also demystifying the proposal writing process. We will review common proposal language and definitions, as well as venues and opportunities for submission. Attendees will leave the session understanding how proposals are reviewed, and hopefully with increased confidence to add their voice to a future conference! |

3B - Leveraging User Experience Design to Enhance Student Outcomes
Abstract
How do we strategically re-envision goals for student success in a dynamic advising environment? Whether you are an advisor or administrator, explore the concept of user experience (UX) design and how it provides new lenses to support change while centering the student experience and voice. UX design considers how policies, staffing, and structures of advising help achieve our strategic goals. Unlike Intentional design, which focuses on learning outcomes, UX design examines experiences through the lens of the student. Effective use can highlight areas which need to be addressed to remove barriers, inequities, and non-essential elements. Participants will be invited to share, analyze, and contemplate how UX design approaches can be applied to their own campuses to strengthen advising practices. |

3C - 1st Now: Forming a Foundational Relationship of Support for First- semester, First-year Students
Abstract
For the Fall 2022 semester, academic advisors in the School of Architecture and Planning at UB piloted a small outreach program for our first-semester, first-year students that were identified as first generation or underrepresented students. This outreach program, called 1st Now, was conducted within the first 5 weeks of the semester and focused on helping students identify and connect with a support network. While we had modest participation in the pilot, we had several interesting interactions and learned a lot to help us with future implementation. We hope you can take ideas from our experience, but we also welcome your feedback as we prepare to implement again next year. |
