WNY Advising Tech Resources
Engaging in Social Media/TechThere are various reasons for joining social media: curiosity, connecting with family/friends, engaging in new technologies, work responsibilities, etc.... There are many benefits to adopting technology as an advisor or higher education professional, if you are willing to learn about social media & technology. However, there are still some concerns and general stumbling blocks which might include privacy concerns, debate on the value of "friending" students, which social media platforms your students are on, etc... There are no silver bullet answers. It is best to start small, follow and learn from others who seem to have more experience (some will gladly help you out), and don't do or say anything that you don't mind being repeated in public.
If you are willing to consider social media, a whole world of opportunities exists. You can connect directly with experts in various fields, catch up with colleagues from across the nation with chats, follow professional development through conference back-channels, and connect more directly with students. |
